How to play Ordsnok

Short answer

Open Ordsnok in your browser or the app, then choose a five-, six- or seven-letter game. Enter a word of the right length and submit it. Colours show which letters are correct, and you get the word length plus one attempt to solve the word.

1. Choose the daily word or a random game

The daily word is one shared challenge for everyone playing in the same language that day. Random games let you practise with five, six or seven letters whenever you want. The daily word needs an internet connection and an anonymous player profile, while random games can be tried locally without a player profile.

2. Submit a valid guess

Type one word with the selected length and submit it. Ordsnok checks that the guess is in the word list before evaluating the letters. A word that is not in the list cannot be used as an attempt.

3. Read the letter colours

Green means the letter is correct and in the correct position. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in another position. A neutral or grey tile means the letter is not present in the word as used in that guess. Use the feedback to narrow your next attempt.

4. Finish and follow your progress

A game ends when you find the word or run out of attempts. Results can appear in your statistics and, when you play in a group, in the group’s daily result list. Hints are optional; using a hint affects the score.

How many rows do you get for each length?

The word length determines both the target length and the number of attempts. Five letters gives six attempts, six letters gives seven attempts, and seven letters gives eight attempts. You can use every row without following a prescribed guessing style. The key is to submit words with the right length that exist in the word list.

When a tile is green, you have both the letter and its position. When it is yellow, you have the letter but need to move it. Guesses can contain repeated letters, and the game evaluates the feedback that is relevant to that row. Read the whole row before choosing the next attempt.

Can you play random games without a player profile?

Yes. You can try random games locally without a player profile. The daily word, groups and statistics need an internet connection and an anonymous player profile.

Once you have an anonymous player profile, you can link Apple or Google and keep that same profile and server-backed results. Local random games without a profile are not automatically transferred to another device.

How do hints work?

A hint is optional, not a requirement for finishing. A used hint costs 20 points, so consider whether the extra help is worth the deduction in that game. The hint is designed to provide safe letter information in the interface, not to make the whole target word visible before you have played it through.

When you use a hint, the point deduction appears in the result, statistics and group result list. The rule is the same for every word length.

How do you share without spoilers?

When you finish, you can share a result that shows attempts and outcome without printing today’s word. That lets you send a small win or frustrating loss to a friend without ruining the challenge for someone who has not played. Avoid copying guesses or screenshots that provide more information than the spoiler-free share format.

The group’s daily result list follows the same principle. Members can see that a player completed the challenge and how the result compares, but an unfinished challenge should not become a shortcut to the answer. Everyone can discuss the game while still solving it themselves.

How can you practise without an answer strategy?

Start with a valid guess that uses several different letters, then let the colours guide the next row. There is no published strategy that guarantees a win, and Ordsnok does not promise specific averages or difficulty levels. A useful exercise is to note which letters are confirmed, which must move, and which should not be used again.

For five, six and seven letters the same idea works with different room for mistakes. Try without hints when you want to follow your progress, and use one when the goal is to learn or finish. Read about the word lists if a guess is rejected, and contact support with language and length if a common word appears to be missing.

A quick reminder

  1. Choose a language and word length.
  2. Enter a word with the right number of letters.
  3. Read the green, yellow and grey feedback.
  4. Use your next attempt to test what you learned.

Frequently asked questions about the rules

How many attempts do I get?

You get the word length plus one attempt: six attempts for a five-letter word, seven for six letters and eight for seven letters.

Can I play in a browser?

Yes. You can play Ordsnok at play.ordsnok.app or in the app.

Do I have to play the daily word?

No. The daily word is the daily challenge, while random games are available whenever you want. You can also read about the word lists first.

Does sharing a result reveal the answer?

No. Result sharing is designed to show attempts and outcome without showing the daily word.

Can I play without a player profile?

Yes. You can try random games locally without a player profile. The daily word, groups and statistics need internet access and an anonymous player profile.

How many points does a hint remove?

A hint deducts 20 points. You decide whether the help matters more than the score in that game.

What should I do if a guess is rejected?

Check that the word has the right length and exists in the word list. If a common word is still missing, send the language, length and word to support without account or payment details.

Can I play more than once on the same day?

Yes. The daily word is the shared daily challenge, while random games can be started repeatedly with five, six or seven letters.
